Total Confusion

Joe Neal

This machine is well-travelled, built as a Swoop in 1936 by Orton & Spooner, but has since been converted to an Ark/Speedway then finally a Waltzer. The ride had 12 owners in total starting with Jack Patching from 1936 to 1938, James Collins from 1938 to 1948 and Jack Proctor from 1948 to 1949. The ride then entered 9 years at Merrie England Park in Ramsgate, a park that later was renamed Pleasurama Amusements before going out of business in 1988. The Park sold the machine to Basil Drake in 1959 before being resold to Charlie Beach in 1963. In 1969 Charlie sold the ride to J Smith and while the details are unknown, it is believed that before Glen Remblance purchased the ride in 1985 Basil Drake had a 2nd spell operating it. before Joe Neal purchased the Waltzer in 2018 there were 2 other owners Robert Summers(1994 to 1995) and Jimmy Dean(1996 to 2018). It is not known when the conversions were made however there are pictures of it operating as an Ark in 1972 but as a Waltzer in 1974, the machine was known as the Olympia Ark when it was an Ark/Speedway
